The Monopteros in the English Garden – it is a beautiful and impressive circular temple located in the center of the park in the southern part<\/a> of the English Garden on a small hill.<\/p>\n

It is “the” prominent landmark in Munich and offers a wonderful, breathtaking view over the entire park as well as the sunbathing lawn<\/a> (Sch\u00f6nfeldwiese) on the Schwabing stream. The view of Munich’s city skyline, such as the Frauenkirche on Marienplatz and the Theatinerkirche on Odeonsplatz, is also magnificent.<\/p>\n

The Monopteros is not only impressive to look at, it also serves as a popular photo backdrop for romantic wedding pictures for many newlyweds.<\/p>\n

History:<\/h3>\n

A monopteros is a round building with columns, without a closed interior. In the Classicist and Baroque periods, monoperties were often built in English or French gardens.<\/p>\n

The Monopteros in Munich has 10 columns. It is richly decorated and has a beautiful domed roof. King Ludwig had it built in honor of Elector Karl Theodor. In 1831, the project was decided tohe construction period was from 1833 to 1837. <\/span>But the Monopteros was not completed until 1936\/37.<\/p>\n

The Monopteros was designed by Leo von Klenze<\/h3>\n

Designed by Leo von Klenze and built from Kehlheim limestone: beautifully painted in shades of red, green and gold, the sight of the Monopteros still delights many visitors today. But few people know this: The building stands on a 15-metre-high brick base, which was heaped up with earth to form a hill. Leo von Klenze was also court architect and responsible for the design of K\u00f6nigsplatz, Glyptothek, Alte Pinakothek and Residenz. Incidentally, the Monopteros was completely renovated in 2016 and the fa\u00e7ade and dome were repaired.<\/p>\n

What does monopteros mean?<\/h4>\n

A monopteros is a round building with columns which, in contrast to the tholos, does not have a cella as a closed interior according to modern usage (source: Wikipedia<\/a>)<\/p>\n

By the way:<\/strong>in the 1960s, the Monopteros was a popular meeting place for the hippie movement<\/span>.<\/p>\n

Magnificent view from the Monopteros English Garden<\/h3>\n

From the Monopteros you have a wonderful view of the southern English Garden as well as the Frauenkirche and the silhouette of Munich’s city center.<\/p>\n

It is one of the park’s landmarks and is a popular meeting place. At its feet are the two large sunbathing lawns of the English Garden. In winter, its hill serves as a toboggan hill for small children and the Chinese Tower<\/a> is in the immediate vicinity. <\/p>\n

Monopteros English Garden – the easiest way to get there:<\/h3>\n

Accessible by subway U3\/U4\/U5\/U6 to the stop Odeonsplatz or Universit\u00e4t or by streetcar 16 to the stop Paradiesstra\u00dfe, or by bus 58\/154 to the stop Tivolistra\u00dfe. The Monopteros in Munich’s English Garden is located between Tempelbergstrasse and Carl-Theodor-Strasse.)<\/p>\n
