Open-air theater in the amphitheater

The Blütenring Verein e.V. once again plays on the open-air stage in the amphitheater. Rehearsals are already underway with director Jaume Villalba and his acting troupe.

From June 20-22 and 27-29, 2025, our tried-and-tested Blütenring ensemble will be playing for the adults on Friday and Saturday evenings, preceded as always by live music
“The Miserable Madmen of Valence”

(freely adapted from Victor Hugo and Lope de Vega)

The two Sunday afternoons begin with the traditional pretzel parade for the children, followed by the play “The knight who wanted to be a cook”

So bring your picnic and a good mood and look forward to the Blütenring Theater.

History of the Blütenring e.V.

The history of the amateur dramatics group, which unites lovers of open-air theater, goes back to 1977. Friends got together to perform the tragedy “Sappho”, written by the painter Rudolf Levy in Munich, in a garden “Am Blütenring” in Munich, north of the Aumeister. Performances were also held in this garden in subsequent years. Two special features have enriched the theater performances from the very beginning. On the one hand, the audience often came in costume in keeping with the theme, and on the other, they usually brought an opulent picnic with them.

As the number of spectators increased, the theater group decided to move to the neighboring Englischer Garten in 1980. After the first few years on a meadow near Osterwaldstr. was played, the desire for a permanent theater space soon arose. The search for this place led the Blütenring to the traces of the former amphitheater, which was built by Elector Karl Theodor of Bavaria and was used for performances over 220 years ago. The joy of this discovery gave rise to the idea of rebuilding the amphitheater.

On 27 November 1982, 17 members of the drama group founded the association, which is recognized as a non-profit organization, with the purpose set out in its statutes of promoting Munich theater life by rebuilding and operating the amphitheatre in the English Garden.
On 13 July 1985, Dr. Pankraz Freiherr von Freyberg, the first president of the Blütenring, opened the amphitheatre built by the association with donations. The satire “Lohengrin” based on Nestroy was performed for the first time that day.
