History of the Schäffler trade
The dance, one of Munich’s oldest traditions, has been around since 1517. After the end of a plague epidemic, the barrel makers wanted to lure the people of Munich, who were still sitting fearfully in their homes, back onto the streets. That’s why the Schäffler marched to Marienplatz with music, dancing and fun.
