Chinesischer Turm beer garden – one of Munich’s most famous beer gardens

In the 18th century there was a so-called “Chinese economy” in the English Garden. It was located south of the China Tower and housed a bowling alley, a dance floor and five outdoor pavilions. This gave rise to the Chinese Tower beer garden.

Beer was first served at the Chinese Tower in the Biedermeier period

The first beer garden officially opened here in 1974. With 7,000 seats, it is the second largest beer garden in Munich.

The beer garden is popular with locals and tourists, young and old alike. Even at the first ray of sunshine, it develops a strong attraction for many visitors to the English Garden. Sparkling, Bavarian, refreshing beer from the Hofbräuhaus is served.

Bavarian brass bands provide a traditional beer garden feeling with their hearty music on the Chinaturm. They play every Wednesday and at weekends in summer, weather permitting. (Access via U3/U6 Giselastraße, bus 54/58/68/154 or streetcar 18).

The beer garden is self-service and every guest collects their own drinks from the bar. Those who are hungry can indulge themselves with traditional Bavarian fare from the food stalls.

For example, pork knuckles, chicken and bratwurst sausages are on offer. But there is also “a good snack” with sausage and radish. Vegetarians need have no fear, they are also catered for here: various types of cheese, Kaiserschmarrn and Käsespätzle are just a small selection of dishes for the vegetarian palate.

By the way, you are allowed to bring your own snacks to Munich’s large traditional beer gardens. However, you have to buy the drinks on site. It is always best to ask if you are unsure.

Beer is available in many variations at the bar. The most popular are, of course, Maß and Radlermaß. Non-alcoholic beer and drinks are also available.

When you pay, you receive a deposit stamp for the glass. You can only get your deposit back with this stamp and the glass. The beer mug is the property of the pub and may not be taken home…

Tip:

On nice days, people flock here from all sides. At first glance, the beer garden seems very full, but there are usually still plenty of free seats near the seating area and the carousel.

If you prefer something a little more dignified and would like to be served, sit down in the “Restaurant am Chinesischen Turm”. There our palate is spoiled with good, upscale cuisine.

Free internet access via WLAN is also available in the beer garden at the Chinese Tower.

PS: If you visit Munich in July, don’t miss the Kocherlball. It takes place early in the morning from 6:00 to 10:00 a.m. in the beer garden at the Chinese Tower. Check dates online beforehand.
