Tunnel Englischer Garten – Undertunneling of the Isarring

English Garden Tunnel – no reunification

In the 1960s, the Mittlerer Ring divided the English Garden into two halves. Since the 1970s, a couple of architects have been campaigning for the reunification of the two parts of the English Garden by tunneling under the Isar Ring.

Less noise and more nature were at the forefront of the project. The couple was supported by the encouragement of many Munich citizens. In 2017, the city council then decided to start concrete planning for a tunnel under the Isarring.

As reported by the Süddeutsche Zeitung on March 8, 2022, the city council has decided not to pursue the project any further. You can find the complete article “Aus für den Tunnel im Englischen Garten” on the SZ website.

The planned Englischer Garten tunnel was to be 390 meters long and banish cars underground. Its green surface would reconnect the two halves of the largest city park.

Kleinhesseloher See should also undergo a small redesign to create more space on the lakeshore. Until now, the two sides of the English Garden were connected by a narrow, steep bridge behind the Seehaus. This was not always easy to find for tourists and locals alike.
