The painting collection of the well-known collector Schack

Von Schack wrote: “Poetry is the mother of all arts, and painters and musicians can only be considered true artists if they, like the poet, are filled with a poetic spirit”. His collection therefore also contains mainly historical paintings and landscapes, as well as a work by Spitzweg, for example, which was classified as popular painting at the time.

The history

Adolf Friedrich von Schack was born in Schwerin in 1815. He worked as a lawyer and diplomat, but later devoted himself solely to his literary preferences. In 1856, at the invitation of Maximilian II, he went to Munich, where he belonged to the circle of scientists and writers.

However, von Schack is primarily known for his collection of paintings, which he mainly amassed in the 1860s and 1870s. At the time, he wanted to promote less well-known but talented young artists.

The most famous paintings in the Schack Collection are Franz Lenbach’s The Shepherd Boy and Rübezahl as well as the painting “Des Knaben Wunderhorn” by Moritz von Schwind. The originals can be found in the Schack Collection.
