If you’re interested in contemporary art, the Haus der Kunst München right next to the English Garden is the place to go!
The world’s leading center for contemporary art
The historic, neoclassical building of the Haus der Kunst is located in the very south of the English Garden on Prinzregentenstraße. Exciting exhibitions of contemporary art show how artists deal with and explore themes from all over the world in a wide variety of ways.
With its exhibitions, Haus der Kunst aims to sharpen the view of contemporary art by incorporating different points of view. An interdisciplinary program of the highest artistic quality and cultural relevance is offered, according to the Haus der Kunst’s own description on its website (1).
The exhibited artists included Jörg Immendorf, Vivan Sundaram, Francis Bacon, Andy Warhol, Patti Smith, Gerhard Richter and many more.
The house belongs to the Free State of Bavaria and is run by the “Haus der Kunst Foundation”. The museum is open from Monday to Sunday.
The story:
The neoclassical building was built between 1933 and 1937 under Adolf Hitler. The monumental building was designed by Paul Ludwig Troost. Together with the two NSDAP buildings on Königsplatz, they were regarded as monuments to the National Socialist regime.
In 1931, the Glass Palace in the Old Botanical Garden burned down. The Munich artists’ associations founded the “Ausstellungsleitung München” to build a new exhibition venue for further events and commissioned the Munich professor Adolf Abel with the new building.
After Hitler became Reich Chancellor in 1933, he rejected the project immediately before the planned start of construction and personally handed over the contract to Paul Ludwig Troost. He had already rebuilt the NSDAP headquarters Braunes Haus for Hitler.
He also no longer wanted the Haus der Kunst to be located in the Old Botanical Garden and chose the southern entrance to the English Garden as its new location. The Prinzregentenstraße was simultaneously turned into a parade route.
