North part English Garden

Northern part of the English Garden – it differs from the southern part in every respect. While the south is used by half the city for local recreation, the northern part offers idyllic nature and quiet, secluded spots.

How do you get from the southern part of the English Garden to the northern part?

If you want to walk from the south to the north, cross the bridge at Kleinhesseloher See, near the Seehaus restaurant, or drive off the middle ring road in the direction of Seehaus München and then drive under the middle ring road to get to the other side. If you’re lucky, you’ll get a parking space there.

Beautiful walks

From here you come to the beer garden and the Hirschau restaurant, cross a small settlement if you follow the road, and at the end of it you suddenly come to peaceful, beautiful nature. Winding paths lead past beautiful meadows, idyllic places invite you to linger, secluded paths lead along streams, which you can cross again and again on small bridges – often without meeting anyone.

The dragonfly pond and the duck pond

Be sure to walk past the dragonfly pond and the duck pond. These two small lakes are beautifully situated and offer a great, natural ambience. You are further north.

You should also always have a small blanket with you in the English Garden so that you can sit down on one of the many beautiful meadows and linger for a while.

If you walk or cycle north along the Isar to the right, you will come to the weir and can catch a wonderful view of the Isar. When you cross the bridge, continue between the Isar and the canal via the “Isarinsel Oberföhring” back to the wooden bridge. From there you can continue to the Aumeister, for example.

There are plenty of opportunities to sunbathe or barbecue along the Isar. If you cross the bridges over the canal, you will end up in the Oberföhring district, where you can eat well – but not quite as cheaply – at the Emmeramsmühle restaurant.

English garden with dog.

Near Crailsheimerstrasse, between Schwabinger Bach and Oberstjägermeisterbach, there are two very large meadows that are often used by dog owners – but officially dogs must be kept on a lead here. The “Mini-Hofbräuhaus” kiosk is a popular meeting and refreshment point for all owners of four-legged friends. This is where the pack of dogs roam. A little tip: the schnitzels taste particularly good here.

The beer garden at the end of the street

At the northernmost end of the English Garden is the traditional “Biergarten Aumeister” with adjoining restaurant. This beer garden is still reasonably quiet and cozy and is mainly frequented by Munich locals.

Watching sheep in the English Garden is a special experience, and not just for children. The location of the flock of sheep changes. In the picture above, the sheep are in the northern part of the English Garden just behind the Hirschau Munich (Gyslingstraße halfway to the end of the street). The flock of sheep can be found on the left-hand side.

The reunification of the English Garden through the tunnel canceled

The two parts of the English Garden have been separated by the middle ring road since the 1960s. There were plans for reunification. In spring 2022, the decision was made to discontinue the project.
